Quería compartir con ustedes este proyecto de ilustración autogestionado que hice durante el tiempo que estuve viviendo en Antigua, Guatemala. Estas ilustraciones marcaron un antes y un después en mi práctica artística ya que con ellas pude consolidar una estética que representara mi identidad como ilustradora, algo que había estado buscando hace mucho tiempo. Retratar personas y realidades que me encontraba en mis viajes era algo que siempre había hecho pero sabía que faltaba desarrollar la manera más adecuada de hacerlo que representara también quién soy yo como artista. Creo que la razón por la que finalmente lo logré con este proyecto es porque la historia que buscaba contar a través de estas ilustraciones era algo que me emocionaba y conmovía hasta lo más profundo. He vivido en Antigua en dos oportunidades, la primera en el año 2014 y la segunda ahora en el 2018. En ambas ocasiones trabajé como voluntaria en distintos centros comunitarios y organizaciones que apoyan a niños en situaciones vulnerables como EducArte y Semilla de Esperanza y Amor. Enseñando fui testigo de las carencias que impactan a grupos sociales vulnerables en Guatemala, en especial a las mujeres y niños indígenas. Pude ver con mis propios ojos como mis alumnos sufrían de vivir en un ambiente repleto de fuertes realidades en asuntos de desigualdad de género, matrimonio y embarazo adolescente, bajos índices de escolaridad, inequidad laboral y desnutrición crónica. Me propuse hacer un proyecto que denunciara esta realidad al mundo y lo titulé Dolores Guatemaltecos.

I wanted to share with you this illustration project I did during the time I was living in Antigua, Guatemala. These illustrations were a turning point in my artistic practice since they allowed me to consolidate an aesthetic that represented my identity as an illustrator. This is something that I had been looking to achieve for quite a while. I had always portrayed people and realities I saw while traveling but I was missing a way of doing it that also represented who I am as an artist. I think the reason why I finally got to that point with this project is because the story I wanted to tell with these illustrations was something that deeply moved me. While teaching art to children I witnessed the narrow circumstances that greatly impact vulnerable social groups in Guatemala, specially indigenous women and children. I was able to see with my own eyes how my students suffered the consequences of living in an environment with vast issues in matters of gender equality, teenage marriage and pregnancy, schooling, income inequality and chronic malnutrition. I decided I would do an illustration project that denounced this reality to the world and I entitled it Dolores Guatemaltecos.
